Traditionally, a Dirndl is a piece of clothing that had to be suitable for everyday life and work. This is also the reason for the Dirndl's cut: even the skirt (like the apron) of a long Dirndl does not reach down to the feet, as it does with modern maxi dresses, but ends just above the ankles. In this way, the hem was not getting as dirty when women would wade through shallow waters or trudge over pastures and fields. Compared to the short Mini Dirndl or the knee-length Midi Dirndl, a Dirndl with a long skirt is usually a bit more traditional and "in proper style".
The Long Dirndl has become rare - and with that perfect for ladies who like to stand out from the crowd with their style! With us you will find a large selection of long Dirndl - there is something for every taste!
On which occasions are long Dirndl worn?
Since the Dirndl is one of Germany's best-known traditional costumes, it has long been worn in many other regions on different occasions.
Long Dirndl, the appropriate Dirndl aprons and typical alpine plaited hairstyles are worn by women especially on festive occasions, for example:
- at popular folk festivals like the Oktoberfest
- on fun fairs, especially when traditional brass music is presented there
- at church festivals, Pentecostal Processions or other Christian holidays
- in the context of private celebrations, such as in the case of jubilees or weddings in the village community
- at festivities of clubs, in particular of rifle clubs or musical societies
From which materials can Dirndl be manufactured?
The traditional Dirndl are usually made of cotton, linen fabric or silk. In the course of time, however, for practical reasons, variations of polyester have also been established.
These accessories enrich every long Dirndl
The distinctive Dirndl apron is inseparably linked to the actual ladies' Dirndl. This can be monochrome according to tradition and taste, multi-colored striped or decorated with other patterns.
But be careful! The loop with which this apron is tied is traditionally used as a communication tool on the Oktoberfest and other festivities:
- If the bow is on the right, you will show that you are spoken for, engaged, or already married.
- A left-hand loop displays the single status.
- If the bow is at the front, the wearer is a virgin, when the loop is directed backward, the wearer is widowed.
Traditionally, a bodice is worn under a Dirndl but modern wearings also allow bras, although a Dirndl bra is particularly suitable for its special shape.
The typical footwear for the Dirndl are leather Trachten shoes with buckles or lacing, whereby especially younger women combine modern Dirndl also with pumps or high heels. At the moment, however, sneakers and ballet flats are very popular with the Dirndl, so there are no limits to your imagination!
